Depero's experience in New York in 1948: ‘I feel dizzy with vertigo but as still as an iron automaton.’

Depero's experience in New York in 1948: ‘I feel dizzy with vertigo but as still as an iron automaton.’

The idea of America as perceived in Italy during the twenty years of Fascism is amplified in the travel accounts of Depero, who stayed there between 1928 and 1930 and then between 1947 and 1948, as that of a fascinating, mythical country, socially and technologically advanced. The artist returned because, despite everything, America was for him a winning formula, an extraordinary, boundless field in which to implement modernity. Although the experimental forms and themes that had characterised his youth seemed distant, the artist's flexibility and versatility remained the fundamental requirement of his mature artistic experience.
