  1st International Conference of DEMHIST
1-4 November 2000, Genua

The Theme

The theme proposed by the DEMHIST conference organizer, and shared by the directors of Palazzo Spinola and Palazzo Reale in Genova, guests of the meeting, concerns the way in which historical house museums introduce themselves to their visitors. This is an extremely important topic that concerns the historical identity and cultural role of house museums, as well as the financial problems linked to their own survival. Which of the many possible interpretations of its historical and social identity should the historical house museum present to the public? Is there a danger of betraying their identity in trying to make historic houses more accessible to the public, by using new approaches, such as employing actors, and staging performances? Are our endeavours to attract more visitors - hoping to raise revenue to solve the museum's financial difficulties - putting the traditional educational purpose of the historical house museum in danger? The Acts of the conference gather the authors' contributions that address these issues.
